How the components work together
A controller measures the power factor through a CT on the incoming supply. When the load needs reactive power, it closes a capacitor-duty contactor and connects a capacitor step; where harmonics are present, a detuned reactor sits in series with that step. Each part has to suit the others: a 7% reactor raises the voltage across the capacitor, so the capacitor rating must be higher, and a contactor must be rated for the step's kVAr, not just its current.
