Phoenix Contact Surge Protection for Panels in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Power Factor Company provides Phoenix Contact surge protection for panels in Saudi Arabia, fitted to APFC and capacitor bank assemblies, together with Phoenix Contact energy measuring devices and terminal blocks. We are an authorised Phoenix Contact partner. A surge arrester at the incomer protects the capacitors, the controller and the contactor coils from switching spikes and lightning-induced transients.
What you receive: a written proposal naming the arrester type, the meters and the terminals, with the panel scope, the lead time and the price within one working day of your specification or load list. Request a quotation

Why add Phoenix Contact surge protection for panels to a bank?
Capacitors and the electronics around them are sensitive to short, high-voltage pulses. Lightning on an overhead line, switching of a large motor or the closing of another capacitor bank can send a pulse through the busbar. The controller display is often the first part to fail, and a weakened capacitor follows. A Type 2 surge protective device on the incomer clamps the pulse before it reaches them. This is a low-cost addition to the build, and it is easier to fit at the factory than on site.
Which Phoenix Contact products do we fit in PFC panels?
- Surge protection: Type 2 devices from the PLUGTRAB family, with replaceable plug-in modules and a remote contact for status.
- Energy measurement: EEM energy measuring devices for incomer or feeder metering, with a communication port for a PLC or building system.
- Terminal blocks: spring-cage and screw terminals for control wiring that stays tight in a hot panel.
- Control power: compact power supplies where the panel carries a separate controller or communication gateway.
What do we deliver?
| Item | Range / specification | Standard | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type 2 SPD on the incomer | Chosen for system voltage and earthing type | IEC 61643-11 | Included in build time |
| EEM energy measuring device | Incomer or feeder, with Modbus if needed | IEC 61557-12 | Agreed in the quotation |
| Terminals and control wiring | Panel-wide | IEC 60947-7-1 | Included in build time |
| Panel carrying the above | 25–1,200 kVAr per panel, 380–415 V, 60 Hz | IEC 61439-1/-2 | 2–3 weeks |
How is a Type 2 surge arrester installed in a panel?
The device connects from each phase to the earth bar, with a backup fuse or breaker if the data sheet requires one, and with short, straight leads. Lead length matters because every extra metre adds voltage drop to the pulse. We fit it just after the incomer isolator and before the busbar, and we wire its status contact to the controller or the alarm lamp so that a spent module is noticed.
Can Phoenix Contact meters monitor power quality?
Yes, within limits. The EEM range measures voltage, current, power, power factor and energy, and some models report harmonic content. For a full compliance record we still use a Class A analyser during a power quality survey, and keep the EEM as the permanent meter that shows trends afterwards.
How does a project with Phoenix Contact parts run?
- Enquiry. You send the specification or an existing panel drawing.
- Risk check. We review the supply type, the earthing and the exposure to lightning.
- Selection. We choose the arrester class and the meter type.
- Fit. The parts are installed at the factory, or retrofitted on site.
- Test. We check wiring, status contacts and meter readings.
- Handover. You receive the data sheets and the settings.
- Support. Spent modules are replaced under maintenance.
Phoenix Contact partner questions
Who provides Phoenix Contact surge protection for panels in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Power Factor Company provides Phoenix Contact surge protection for panels, meters and terminals in its PFC assemblies and as a retrofit. We are an authorised partner of Phoenix Contact. The proposal states the arrester class and the fitting position.
What affects the cost of surge protection?
Cost depends on the arrester type, the system voltage, the number of poles, whether a backup fuse is included and whether you want a remote status contact. In a new panel the addition is small. A site retrofit adds labour and shutdown time.
How long does fitting take?
Fitting in a new panel adds no separate lead time because it follows the build schedule of 2–3 weeks for an APFC panel. A retrofit needs a shutdown window, and the quotation proposes a date after we have seen the panel.
Which Phoenix Contact SPD type does an LV panel need?
A Type 2 device at the main distribution board suits most panels. A Type 1 device is chosen when the building has an external lightning protection system or a direct line exposure. We confirm by the site risk.
Can Phoenix Contact energy meters feed a building system?
Yes. Models with a communication port send readings by Modbus to a PLC or building management system. We state the protocol and the register list in the handover pack, and we test the link with you.
Do you retrofit surge protection to an existing bank?
Yes. We inspect the incomer, find space near the earth bar, fit the device with short leads, test the status contact and add the work to the maintenance record for later inspections.
