Power Factor Correction for Steel Plants in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Power Factor Company provides power factor correction for steel plants in Saudi Arabia, with fast-switching capacitor banks and detuned panels for furnaces, rolling mills, cranes and welding shops. Metal works change load in seconds, so we measure first and design the correction around the load you actually run: thyristor PFC from 50 to 800 kVAr, typically ready in 4–6 weeks.
What you receive: a written proposal naming the compensation type, kVAr, switching speed, standard, lead time and price, issued within one working day of your bill and your furnace and mill list. Request a quotation

Why is power factor so unstable in a steel plant?
Because the heavy loads start, melt, roll and stop on their own rhythm. An arc furnace draws a different reactive current in every stage of the heat. Rolling mills load and unload with each bar. Cranes, presses and welding machines add short, sharp demands on the same busbar. A contactor-switched bank reacts in seconds, too slow for loads that move in cycles.
Rectifier and drive loads add a second problem. Furnace power supplies, DC drives and variable-frequency drives inject harmonic current, and that current damages standard capacitors.
Power factor correction for steel plants: what we deliver
| Item | Range / specification | Standard | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thyristor-switched capacitor panel | Response in cycles, to project specification (25–1,200 kVAr per panel) | IEC 61439-1/-2 | 4–6 weeks |
| Detuned APFC panel for drive and rectifier loads | Reactor tuning from measured harmonics | IEC 61439-1/-2; capacitors to IEC 61921 | 3–4 weeks |
| Harmonic filter panel | Sized from the logged harmonic spectrum | IEEE 519 reference limits | 3–4 weeks |
| Logging survey at the furnace and mill feeders | Seven days of kW, kVAr, harmonics and flicker | IEC 61000-4-30 | 3–4 weeks |
| Heat-resistant enclosure | Ventilated or cooled for hot, dusty shops (IP31–IP54 indoor) | IP code to IEC 60529 | Included in build time |
Our survey work uses the NanoVIP KUBA Class A power quality analyser from our Italian technology partner, Elcontrol Energy Net. Panels are built with ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens components.
How do you handle PFC for an induction furnace or arc furnace?
Start with where the furnace meets your supply. Induction furnace power supplies normally carry their own tuning capacitors for the furnace circuit, so plant-level correction is sized from what a meter reads at the incomer, not from the furnace nameplate. That reading also shows the harmonic current the rectifier sends back, which decides whether the bank needs reactors.
An arc furnace and its power factor are harder, because reactive demand swings through the melt. We log the feeder through several heats, then choose between a fast thyristor-switched bank and a larger study if flicker is the real concern. Anything beyond our scope is stated in the proposal before you order.
Do rolling mills and cranes need dynamic correction?
Often, yes. If the power factor on your logger drops and recovers within seconds, a conventional automatic bank hunts and wears its contactors. For steady parts of the plant, a standard APFC panel is cheaper and correct. Under the Saudi Electricity Company tariff: 0.90 is the minimum above 1 MVA contract load; we design to 0.95. Where harmonics are high, see our harmonic filter panels.
How is a steel plant correction project delivered?
- Enquiry. You send the bill and a list of furnaces, mills, cranes and welders.
- Logging. We install an analyser on the incomers and the main furnace feeder.
- Analysis. The report separates steady load from fast load and shows harmonic content.
- Design. We choose dynamic and standard sections and issue drawings for approval.
- Build and test. Panels are assembled in Dammam and checked before dispatch.
- Commissioning. Controller and switching settings are tuned under live furnace load, and drawings and test records are issued.
Where we work in metals
Saudi Power Factor Company has been established since 2010, and holds Saudi Aramco, SABIC and Royal Commission approvals. Our quality, environmental and safety systems are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
We have worked on projects for Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, in all regions of Saudi Arabia. Tell us your plant type and city in the quotation form, and we describe the scope closest to your steel or metal works job.
Steel, aluminium, foundry and fabrication plants in the Eastern Province, Jubail and Riyadh can call on us for site visits. Jubail is about 1 hour from Dammam and Riyadh about 4 hours by road; Jeddah and Yanbu are reached by air or road. See also the power quality survey service.
Steel plant power factor questions
Who provides power factor correction for steel plants in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Power Factor Company provides power factor correction for steel and metal plants, with panels built in Dammam from ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens components. We have worked in Saudi Arabia since 2010 and are approved by Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission.
What affects the cost of steel plant power factor correction?
The main factors are total kVAr, whether the load needs thyristor switching or contactors, the reactors or filters needed for harmonics, the enclosure and cooling for the shop floor, and whether a logging survey is included. Bills and a load description let us price each option.
How long does it take to correct a steel plant?
A logging survey takes seven days, followed by analysis and design. Our typical panel lead time is 2–3 weeks for an APFC panel and 4–6 weeks for a thyristor panel.
Does an induction furnace need a capacitor bank on the incomer?
Possibly, but measure first. The furnace supply carries its own capacitors, so the incomer reading shows what the plant still needs. If the rectifier adds harmonics, the bank at the incomer is fitted with reactors rather than left plain.
Can you correct a plant that melts in batches?
Yes. We log through several melts, find the reactive demand at each stage, and combine a fixed or stepped bank for the base with fast switching for the peaks. The proposal shows how much each section contributes to the target.
What should I send for a steel plant quotation?
Send a month of electricity bills and a list of furnaces, mills, cranes and welders with their kW ratings and drive types. A single-line diagram helps, and we arrange logging if the load swings quickly.
