Capacitor Bank Overheating and Failure
Saudi Power Factor Company diagnoses capacitor bank overheating and failure in industrial plants across Saudi Arabia, finds the cause and replaces the damaged parts. Heat is a symptom: harmonic overload, high ambient temperature, welded contactors, loose joints and ageing capacitors each produce it. Fitting new capacitors without finding the cause means the next set fails the same way.
What you receive: a written fault report with the cause, parts to replace and price within one working day of receiving photos of the bank, capacitor nameplates and your last service record. Request a quotation

What does a failing capacitor bank look like?
Typical signs, in rough order of seriousness:
- a hot, noisy or dusty panel with fans running continuously;
- discoloured or loose terminals and cable lugs;
- unequal current across phases or between steps;
- repeated blown capacitor fuses;
- bulged, leaking or cracked capacitor cans; and
- a step that stays energised after the load falls.
Isolate and discharge the bank before anyone opens the panel.
Why is my capacitor bank overheating?
| Symptom | Likely cause | How we confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Capacitor current above nameplate | Harmonic overload or resonance with drives and UPS units | Harmonic measurement, current per phase |
| Whole panel hot in summer | Blocked filters, failed fans or dust, high ambient temperature | Thermography, enclosure temperature |
| Single terminal hot | Loose joint or damaged lug | Thermal image, torque check |
| One step always on and hot | Welded contactor | Contactor test with coil off |
| Capacitance below rating | Ageing, or repeated overload | Capacitance reading on each unit |
| Fuses blow on switching | Inrush, wrong fuse, or contactor without damping | Fuse rating, contactor type |
| High voltage across the bank | Over-compensation at light load, or high supply voltage | Voltage and controller log |
Why do capacitors bulge?
A bulged can means gas has formed inside from repeated dielectric breakdown. The overpressure disconnector in the can lifts and opens the circuit, so the capacitor is finished and cannot be reset. Replace it, and check its neighbours, because the cause is usually shared across the step. Typical causes are overvoltage, heat and harmonic current. Where harmonics are the driver, a detuned capacitor bank is the lasting answer.
How do we fix a failing capacitor bank?
- Isolate and discharge. The bank is made safe before we open it.
- Inspect. We photograph, take thermal images and note nameplates.
- Measure. We record current per phase, capacitance of each unit and the harmonic level, with a power quality survey where needed.
- Report. You receive the cause and a repair scope.
- Repair. We replace capacitors, contactors, fuses or fans under retrofit and replacement, and add reactors if harmonics are the cause.
- Re-test. We check currents and temperatures on load.
- Prevent. A maintenance contract schedules the checks.

Questions we are asked before quoting
Who diagnoses capacitor bank overheating in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Power Factor Company provides fault diagnosis and repair for capacitor banks from Dammam, backed by our own panel workshops. We have worked in Saudi Arabia since 2010 and are approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission.
What affects the cost of repairing a bank?
Cost follows the cause and the number of damaged parts. A few capacitors and a contactor is a small scope, while a full set plus reactors and cooling is larger. The fault report separates the repair from any upgrade.
How long does a repair take?
A diagnosis visit and parts replacement for a single panel can be short once parts are available. Our typical lead time for parts is the next working day for parts in Dammam stock. A full rebuild follows the panel build schedule.
Can I keep running with one failed capacitor?
We advise isolating the failed step, because a leaking or bulged unit can fail further and heat its neighbours. The other steps can usually stay in service while replacements are on order, with a reduced kVAr.
Do harmonics shorten capacitor life?
Yes. Harmonic current adds heat and, near resonance, can multiply the current several times. Detuned reactors and correctly rated capacitors, 440 V or 525 V, protect the bank. A harmonic measurement shows how much margin you have.
What should I send to get a quotation?
Send photos of the bank and any damaged units, the capacitor nameplates, the step layout and the date of the last service. A thermal image helps. We reply with a diagnosis and repair proposal.
