Power Factor Correction for Petrochemical Plants in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Power Factor Company provides power factor correction for petrochemical plants in Jubail, Yanbu and across Saudi Arabia, with APFC panels and detuned banks for pumps, compressors, extruders and moulding lines. We are approved by SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. Panels follow your project documents, with lead times of 2–3 weeks for an APFC panel and 3–4 weeks for a detuned bank.

What loads set the power factor in a petrochemical plant?
Process plants run on continuous motor loads: cooling-water pumps, feed and transfer pumps, process compressors, blowers and agitators. They are large and steady, so their reactive demand is predictable once measured. Converter plants and drive-fed pumps add harmonics on top.
Downstream plastics works behave differently. An extruder runs a main drive and several heater zones. Hydraulic injection moulding machines cycle a pump motor every few seconds, so their reactive demand rises and falls with every shot. Newer servo-driven machines draw less reactive power but generate more harmonics.
What does a petrochemical or plastics plant need from a supplier?
A vendor-listed supplier that can work to project specifications. Site documents often ask for data sheets, inspection and test plans, material certificates and a witnessed factory test, and we plan these into the schedule from the start. Panels are installed in substations and electrical rooms, not inside classified process areas, which keeps the correction equipment outside the hazardous zone.
The table shows the packages most plants ask for.
Power factor correction for petrochemical plants: our scope
| Item | Range / specification | Standard | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed bank at large steady motors | Selected per motor, to project specification | IEC 61921; IEC 60831 for older banks | 1–2 weeks |
| Automatic APFC panel for process and utility feeders | To project specification (25–1,200 kVAr per panel) | IEC 61439-1/-2 | 2–3 weeks |
| Detuned panel for drive-fed pumps and compressors | Reactor tuning from harmonic data | IEC 61439-1/-2 | 3–4 weeks |
| Fast-step panel for moulding and extrusion lines | Small steps for cycling loads | IEC 61439-1/-2 | 2–3 weeks |
| Witnessed factory test and documentation pack | Inspection and test plan, test record, data sheets | Project specification | Included in build time |
How do we correct extruders and injection moulding machines?
For extruders, the main drive is a steady load and the correction follows the drive. For injection moulding, we use small capacitor steps so the controller can match each cycle without overshooting. When machines have servo or variable-speed pumps, detuned capacitor banks keep the capacitors safe from the harmonics those drives create.
If your loads have drives, a power quality survey shows which busbars need reactors before the panel is designed. Utility tariff rules are set by SEC; we size the correction to the target your bill shows. Saudi Electricity Company rules ask for 0.90 or better above 1 MVA contract load, so we design to 0.95.
How are panels supplied to a Jubail or Yanbu project?
- Enquiry. You send the bills, load list or the project data sheet.
- Requirements review. We read the specification for approved makes, testing and documents.
- Design. Drawings and data sheets go to you or your consultant for approval.
- Build. Panels are assembled in Dammam from approved components.
- Witnessed test. Your inspector can attend the factory test, and the record is issued.
- Delivery. Panels are transported to Jubail or Yanbu and positioned in the electrical room.
- Commissioning and handover. Settings are confirmed under load and the documentation pack is delivered.
Who we serve in Jubail and Yanbu
Saudi Power Factor Company has worked in Saudi Arabia since 2010 and is approved by SABIC, Saudi Aramco and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. We have worked on projects for all three organisations. Our systems are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
Plants owned by Saudi Aramco and SABIC, and sites under the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, are part of our project record. Tell us your plant type and city in the quotation form, and we describe the scope closest to your petrochemical or plastics job.
Jubail Industrial City and Yanbu Industrial City are reached from our Dammam base: Jubail is about 1 hour away, and Yanbu is reached by air or road. See our Jubail power factor correction page and the Aramco and SABIC approvals page for supplier details.
Petrochemical and plastics power factor questions
Who provides power factor correction for petrochemical plants in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Power Factor Company provides power factor correction for petrochemical and plastics plants, building panels in Dammam with ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens components. We are approved by SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu.
What affects the cost of power factor correction for a process plant?
The price turns on total kVAr, the voltage level, whether reactors are needed for drives, the enclosure and room conditions, and the documentation and witnessed testing in the project specification. We price the options separately so you can compare them against the bill savings.
How long do petrochemical plant panels take to deliver?
Lead time depends on kVAr, step count, reactors and the speed of drawing and data-sheet approval. An APFC panel usually takes us 2–3 weeks, and a detuned bank 3–4 weeks. Witnessed testing adds a short inspection step that we schedule with your inspector.
Do extruders need power factor correction?
Usually, yes. The main drive and its heating controls pull reactive current throughout the shift. Correction is sized from the incomer reading, and a small automatic panel normally follows the whole extrusion line without special switching.
Is power factor worse on hydraulic injection moulding machines?
It is more variable. The hydraulic pump motor cycles with every shot, so reactive demand moves quickly. Small capacitor steps and a controller with a short response time follow it more closely than a few large steps would.
What should I send for a petrochemical plant quotation?
Send one month of electricity bills, a motor load list and any project specification clauses on power factor equipment. A single-line diagram helps us confirm busbar sections and where each panel connects.
