Thyristor Switched Capacitor Bank in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Power Factor Company builds the thyristor switched capacitor bank in Saudi Arabia for loads that change faster than a contactor can follow, such as spot welders, cranes, presses and lifts. Solid-state switches connect each capacitor step within a few mains cycles, hold the power factor steady and remove the switching wear that contactors suffer.

What is a thyristor switched capacitor bank?
It is a capacitor bank in which each step is switched by a pair of thyristors instead of a contactor. A fast controller measures the reactive current and fires the thyristors at the instant the supply voltage equals the capacitor voltage. That removes the inrush spike, so the step connects almost silently. Because the thyristors have no moving contacts, they can switch thousands of times a day without wear. Ordinary contactor panels must wait many seconds for each capacitor to discharge before reconnecting it. A thyristor panel does not, which is why it works on loads that swing in fractions of a second.
Do I need dynamic power factor correction?
You need it when the load changes faster than a contactor-switched panel can respond. Typical signs are:
- a spot welding line, where each weld draws a short, heavy reactive pulse;
- an overhead crane or hoist that starts and stops many times a minute;
- presses, shears and injection machines with repeating cycles;
- lifts and escalators in a tall building; and
- a power factor on your bill that stays low although a standard bank is installed.
If the load changes slowly across the day, a conventional APFC panel is simpler and cheaper. Many plants use both: a contactor panel carries the steady base load and a thyristor stage follows the fast swings.

We build with ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens components, chosen to suit your specification and the approval requirements of your site.
Which loads need fast power factor correction?
The question is how fast the reactive demand moves, not how large it is. A crane that lifts once an hour does not need thyristors. A resistance welder that fires every few seconds does. We ask for the cycle time of the load, its peak current and its duty pattern, then compare it with the response time of a contactor step. Where the swings also disturb the voltage, a fast stage can reduce flicker, which neighbouring equipment on the same supply will notice. For arc or induction furnaces, see our notes for steel and metal plants.
How is a dynamic PFC panel designed and commissioned?
- Enquiry. You send your bill, the load list and the cycle times for the fast loads.
- Site data. We confirm supply voltage, transformer rating and CT location. If the load pattern is unclear, a power quality survey records it for a week.
- Design. We fix the kvar, step sizes and reactor tuning, following the method in PFC panel design and sizing, and issue drawings for approval.
- Build. Our Dammam workshops assemble the panel to the approved drawings, including thermal checks of the thyristor modules.
- Factory acceptance test. We check wiring, thyristor firing, protection and step response, and issue the test record.
- Delivery. The panel is packed, transported and positioned at your site.
- Commissioning. We set the target, CT ratio and step sequence, then confirm the response under your real load cycle.
- Documentation and support. You receive as-built drawings, test records and the manual, plus a maintenance schedule if you want one.
Thyristors need harmonic protection like any capacitor step, so every dynamic panel is detuned. Read how reactors work in our detuned capacitor bank guide.
Who we build dynamic PFC panels for
Saudi Power Factor Company has worked in Saudi Arabia since 2010 and is approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. Projects for all three are behind us, and our management systems are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
We have worked on projects for Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, in all regions of Saudi Arabia. Tell us your plant type and city in the quotation form, and we describe the scope closest to your dynamic PFC job.
Dynamic panels go to fabrication shops, automotive and metal-forming plants, ports and container terminals, and buildings with large lift groups. We deliver to every region of Saudi Arabia. Jubail is about 1 hour from Dammam and Riyadh about 4 hours by road; Jeddah and Yanbu are reached by air or road.
Dynamic PFC questions
Who provides a thyristor switched capacitor bank in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Power Factor Company provides dynamic power factor correction panels from its Dammam workshops, built with ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens components. We have been active since 2010 and are approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission.
What affects the cost of a dynamic PFC panel?
Cost depends on total kvar, the number of thyristor steps, the response time you need, the reactor tuning, the cooling method and the enclosure rating. A hybrid layout with contactor steps lowers the cost. Send your bill and load cycle and the proposal prices each option.
How long does delivery take?
Lead time depends on kvar, step count, thyristor module availability and drawing approval. Our typical lead time is 4–6 weeks. Early confirmation of the load cycle and quick approval of drawings shorten the schedule most.
How fast does a thyristor panel respond?
A thyristor stage can reconnect a capacitor step within a few mains cycles, against several seconds for a contactor panel. The controller measures reactive current continuously and fires the correct step.
Is a thyristor panel always better than a contactor panel?
It is better only for fast loads. For steady or slowly changing loads a contactor panel does the same work at lower cost, with fewer parts to cool. We recommend the simpler design whenever your load cycle allows it.
Do thyristor panels need detuning reactors?
Yes. Thyristor steps switch capacitors on a network that often carries drive or rectifier harmonics, so each step is fitted with a series reactor. We choose the tuning from your harmonic readings and load list.
