Power Factor Correction for Hospitals in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Power Factor Company provides power factor correction for hospitals across Saudi Arabia, supplying detuned APFC panels for chillers, air handling, lifts and medical equipment without disturbing sensitive loads. Panels are built for round-the-clock buildings and are planned so that connection never interrupts patient areas: detuned banks from 50 to 1,000 kVAr, typically ready in 3–4 weeks.

What you receive: a written proposal giving capacitor rating, reactor choice, standard, lead time and price, issued within one working day of your electricity bill and main load list. Request a quotation

What drives reactive power in a hospital?

Air conditioning dominates. Water chillers, chilled-water pumps, air handling units and fan coil units run continuously in a Saudi climate, and their motors carry most of the reactive demand. Lifts, sterilisers, laundry and kitchen plant add more.

Hospitals also carry electronic loads that most buildings do not. Imaging equipment, UPS systems, LED lighting and IT racks draw non-sinusoidal current, so the bank must be tolerant of harmonics. X-ray and CT equipment can draw short pulses of heavy current when exposures are made.

Power factor correction for hospitals: our scope

Item Range / specification Standard Typical lead time
Detuned APFC panel at the main LV board To project specification (25–1,200 kVAr per panel) IEC 61439-1/-2; capacitors to IEC 61921 3–4 weeks
Fixed bank for chiller compressor motors Sized from motor kW and running hours IEC 61921 1–2 weeks
Soft-switching steps for sensitive supplies Capacitor-duty contactors, small steps IEC 60947-4-1 2–3 weeks
Generator transfer interlock Disconnects the bank on standby supply Project specification Included in build time
Harmonic and demand survey Seven-day log at the main incomers IEC 61000-4-30 3–4 weeks

Which capacitor bank suits hospital chillers and medical loads?

Chillers run for long stretches and their load follows ambient temperature, so an automatic panel at the main board tracks them well. Big chiller motors can also carry fixed banks. For the electronic loads, we specify detuned capacitor banks with the reactor tuned to the supply, so the capacitors do not amplify harmonics from UPS, drives and lighting.

Standby generators matter here. A generator should not run with capacitors connected, so we interlock the panel with the transfer switch. A power quality survey before design shows whether imaging equipment needs a separate view. Utility tariff rules are set by SEC. Under the Saudi Electricity Company tariff: 0.90 is the minimum above 1 MVA contract load; we design to 0.95.

How do we install without interrupting a live hospital?

  1. Enquiry. You send bills and the main equipment list: chillers, AHUs, lifts and imaging.
  2. Survey. We log the main incomers for seven days to capture day and night demand.
  3. Design. We confirm step sizes, reactors and the generator interlock, then issue drawings.
  4. Build and test. The panel is assembled and tested in Dammam.
  5. Planning. We agree a connection window with your facilities team, since a hospital cannot accept long outages.
  6. Commissioning. We energise steps one at a time and watch voltage and current behaviour.
  7. Handover. Records and settings are issued, with maintenance available afterwards.

Who we support in healthcare and public buildings

Saudi Power Factor Company has worked in Saudi Arabia since 2010, and its quality, environmental and safety systems are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.

We have worked on projects for Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, in all regions of Saudi Arabia. Tell us your plant type and city in the quotation form, and we describe the scope closest to your hospital or healthcare building job.

We are available for hospital, clinic and medical city projects across Saudi Arabia, including the Eastern Province and the western region. We deliver to every region of the Kingdom. Jubail is about 1 hour from Dammam and Riyadh about 4 hours by road; Jeddah and Yanbu are reached by air or road. For other building types, see commercial buildings and malls.

Hospital power factor questions

Who provides power factor correction for hospitals in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Power Factor Company provides power factor correction for hospitals, building detuned APFC panels in Dammam with ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens components. We have worked in Saudi Arabia since 2010.

What affects the cost of a hospital power factor project?

The price reflects total kVAr, the number of steps, the reactors needed for electronic loads, the generator interlock, the enclosure and the room it stands in. Your bills and equipment list let us price the scheme and show each part separately.

How long does a hospital installation take?

Panel lead time depends on kVAr, reactors and drawing approval, and our typical lead time is 3–4 weeks for a detuned panel. On site, the connection is a short, planned outage agreed with your facilities team rather than a long shutdown.

Do medical devices make capacitor banks unsafe?

Not when the bank is detuned. The reactor moves resonance away from the harmonic frequencies that electronic equipment produces, and soft-switching contactors keep step changes gentle. We review the equipment list before design to confirm there are no special restrictions.

Is a capacitor bank needed if the hospital has a generator?

Yes, for the mains supply, because that is where the bill is measured. The generator is the exception: we disconnect all steps when it takes the load, and reconnect them when mains power returns.

What should I send for a hospital quotation?

Send a month of electricity bills and a list of the main equipment: chillers, AHUs, lifts, imaging and UPS. A single-line diagram showing the main LV board and the generator transfer arrangement helps us position the panel.
