Power Factor Correction for Pumping Stations in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Power Factor Company provides power factor correction for pumping stations in Saudi Arabia for municipal, industrial and irrigation sites, from a single capacitor bank at a booster station to automatic panels for multi-pump halls. The design follows your pump motor schedule and your supply: IP55 outdoor or kiosk enclosures, typically ready in 2–3 weeks.
What you receive: a written proposal stating capacitor rating, switching arrangement, enclosure, standard, lead time and price, issued within one working day of your bill and pump schedule. Request a quotation

Why does a pumping station have a low power factor?
A pumping station is a group of induction motors. Each pump needs magnetising current whether it is moving full flow or throttled back, so reactive demand stays high while real power drops. Stations often run duty and standby pumps, and demand follows reservoir level and consumption through the day, with a peak at one end of the day and little load at night.
That pattern creates two points to design for. Low night load means a bank can easily over-correct if steps are too large. Soft starters and variable-speed drives, now common on pumps, add harmonic current that plain capacitors do not tolerate.
Capacitor bank for pump motors: which arrangement fits?
A single pump or a fixed duty pair can carry a fixed bank on the motor feeder, switched together with the starter. A hall with several pumps and varying demand suits an APFC panel at the LV main, with steps sized to the smallest pump. For drive-fed pumps, use a detuned capacitor bank.
Two points are specific to stations. Standby generators must not run with capacitors connected, so the panel is interlocked with the changeover to disconnect all steps. Unattended sites also need a controller alarm output that your telemetry can read.
Power factor correction for pumping stations: our scope
| Item | Range / specification | Standard | Typical lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed capacitor bank for a single large pump | Sized from motor kW and no-load current | IEC 61921; IEC 61439-1/-2 | 1–2 weeks |
| Automatic APFC panel for a pump hall | To project specification (25–1,200 kVAr per panel) | IEC 61439-1/-2 | 2–3 weeks |
| Detuned panel for VFD or soft-started pumps | Reactor tuning from harmonic data | IEC 61439-1/-2 | 3–4 weeks |
| Outdoor kiosk or shaded enclosure | Sand, dust and heat protection (IP31–IP54 indoor) | IP code to IEC 60529 | 2–3 weeks |
| Generator changeover interlock and alarm contact | Disconnects steps on generator supply | Project specification | Included in build time |
How do we build and commission pump station panels?
- Enquiry. You send the bills and the pump schedule with motor kW and starting method.
- Site data. We confirm supply voltage, transformer rating, CT position and where the panel will stand.
- Design. We choose steps, enclosure and generator interlock, and issue drawings.
- Build. The panel is assembled in our Dammam workshops.
- Factory test. Wiring, switching and protection are checked, and a record is kept.
- Delivery and connection. The panel is delivered to the station, and connection is planned around pump rotation so supply is not interrupted.
- Commissioning. We set the target and confirm step behaviour at low and high flow.
- Maintenance. Annual checks are available through our maintenance contracts.
Who we supply for water and utility projects
Saudi Power Factor Company has worked in Saudi Arabia since 2010 and is approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. Our quality, environmental and safety systems are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
We have worked on projects for Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, in all regions of Saudi Arabia. For utilities, that includes projects we have worked on for Saudi Electricity Company in Qassim and for Marafiq in Yanbu. Tell us your plant type and city in the quotation form, and we describe the scope closest to your pumping station or water job.
We are available for pumping station projects across Saudi Arabia, and the stations are often far from town. We deliver to every region of the Kingdom. Jubail is about 1 hour from Dammam and Riyadh about 4 hours by road; Jeddah and Yanbu are reached by air or road. Utility tariff rules are set by SEC, and the wider approach is under power factor correction services.
Pumping station power factor questions
Who provides power factor correction for pumping stations in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Power Factor Company provides power factor correction for pumping stations, with panels built in Dammam using ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens components. We have been active since 2010 and are approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission.
What affects the cost of correcting a pumping station?
Price follows total kVAr, the number of steps, any reactors needed for drives, the enclosure for outdoor conditions, and the generator interlock and alarm outputs. Your bills and pump schedule let us price each item separately.
How long does a pumping station panel take?
Lead time depends on kVAr, steps, reactors and drawing approval. Our typical lead time is 2–3 weeks for an APFC panel and 3–4 weeks for a detuned bank. Site connection can be planned around pump rotation, so the station keeps pumping while the panel is tied in.
Can a capacitor bank damage a standby generator?
It can cause voltage problems, which is why generator supply must exclude it. We interlock the panel with the changeover switch, so all capacitor steps drop out before the generator takes the load, and reconnect only when mains returns.
Does a variable-speed pump still need correction?
Often yes, but the drive changes the answer. A drive presents a high displacement power factor to the supply, so the gain comes from the other motors on the same incomer. A survey shows what the incomer actually needs.
What should I send for a pumping station quotation?
Send a month of electricity bills and the pump schedule showing motor kW, voltage and starting method. A site photo of the available panel position, and the transformer rating, help us choose between indoor and outdoor enclosures.
