What do capacitors do in a capacitor bank?
A capacitor exchanges energy with the supply each cycle, so the reactive current your motors need comes from the capacitor and not from the grid. That cuts current drawn from the transformer and lifts the power factor.
Modern units use metallised polypropylene film. If a weak spot in the film breaks down, the film around it evaporates and the capacitor carries on, which is why they are called self-healing. A pressure-sensitive disconnector inside the can opens the circuit at end of life.

Should I choose 440 V or 525 V capacitors?
Choose by supply voltage and harmonic content. A 440 V capacitor suits a clean supply with moderate load. A 525 V unit is needed with a detuning reactor, because the reactor raises the voltage across the capacitor, and it gives margin where harmonics or voltage swings are present. A rating chosen too low shortens life and is a common cause of overheating and failure. We confirm the choice against your supply data and any detuned bank design.
How much capacitor do I need?
The kVAr follows from your demand in kW and the gap between present and target power factor. For example, a 500 kW load at 0.80 power factor needs about 211 kVAr to reach 0.95. Your bill or load list gives the real figure, and our capacitor bank team converts it into steps.
How do we supply and fit capacitors?
- Send the list. Nameplate photos or the kVAr and voltage of each step.
- We select. Voltage and fusing are matched to the step.
- Supply. Units arrive labelled with the step they replace.
- Fit. Capacitors are changed with the bank isolated and discharged.
- Test. We measure current per phase and capacitance after fitting.
- Record. You receive the datasheets and test readings.

What is the purpose of a capacitor bank?
A capacitor bank supplies the reactive power that motors, transformers and chillers need, so the grid does not have to. That lowers current, frees transformer and cable capacity and lifts the power factor, which removes reactive-power charges from the bill.
Can I mix capacitor makes or ratings in one bank?
It is possible but not advised. Different makes age at different rates, and a mismatched voltage rating can overload one step. We replace like for like, or upgrade the whole set when the supply has changed.
