Capacitor Replacement and PFC Retrofit in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Power Factor Company handles capacitor replacement in Saudi Arabia for ageing PFC panels, renewing worn capacitors, contactors and controllers so the existing enclosure delivers its rated kVAr again. We audit the panel first, replace only what has failed, and upgrade to detuned steps where harmonics have shortened capacitor life.

What you receive: a written audit and proposal listing each part to replace, the standard, lead time and price within one working day of receiving photographs, the nameplate data and your latest bill. Request a quotation

How do I know when a capacitor needs replacing?

Capacitors lose capacitance with age, heat and harmonic stress. The kVAr you pay for shrinks, the power factor drifts back down and the reactive-energy charge returns to the bill. Visible signs include bulging cans, oil leaks, tripped fuses, discoloured cables, and contactors that buzz or weld.

A clamp-meter check on each step tells you more than appearance. A healthy step draws current close to its rating; a weak one draws noticeably less. Photographs of the panel, the nameplates and one recent bill are enough for our engineers to give a first opinion before any visit.

Replacement parts come from ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens ranges, and controllers from Elcontrol Energy Net, our Italian technology partner. We also retrofit panels of other makes.

Can an old APFC panel be upgraded instead of replaced?

Usually yes. The enclosure, busbars and incomer are the long-lived parts, and they often remain sound after the capacitors and contactors have worn out. Renewing the active components costs far less than a new panel and returns the full kVAr.

A new panel is the better route when the enclosure is corroded, the busbar is overheated or damaged, spare parts are no longer made, or your load has grown well beyond the original rating. In that case we quote an APFC panel as an alternative so you can compare both options on price and downtime.

Why do capacitors in a PFC panel fail early?

Four causes account for most early failures. Harmonics overload the capacitors through resonance. High enclosure temperature, often from blocked fans or crowded steps, ages the dielectric. Switching surges from worn contactors damage the cans. Finally, over-voltage on a lightly loaded supply stresses everything.

Replacing capacitors with identical ones without removing the cause repeats the failure. That is why our audit identifies the cause, and why harmonic sites move to a detuned capacitor bank configuration. The diagnosis steps are set out in capacitor bank overheating and failure.

How is a PFC panel retrofit carried out?

  1. Enquiry. You send photographs, nameplate details and a recent bill.
  2. Audit. We inspect the panel on site, test each step and measure current, temperature and harmonic level.
  3. Findings. You receive a report listing what to replace, what to keep and what caused the damage.
  4. Proposal. Scope, parts, outage time and price are agreed with your maintenance team.
  5. Parts and preparation. Replacement components are sourced and, where useful, pre-assembled in our Dammam workshops.
  6. Replacement. Work is carried out during your shutdown window, with isolation under your permit-to-work system.
  7. Re-commissioning. We restore the target, prove step switching under load and record the improved power factor.
  8. After-care. Parts remain available through spare parts supply, and a maintenance contract can follow.

Who we retrofit panels for

Saudi Power Factor Company has worked in Saudi Arabia since 2010 and is approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. We have worked on projects for all three, and hold ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification. Our Dammam workshops, including Al Badrani, prepare replacement assemblies before they go to site.

We have worked on projects for Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, in all regions of Saudi Arabia. Tell us your plant type and city in the quotation form, and we describe the scope closest to your retrofit projects written as content: plant type, location, what was replaced, kVAr restored job.

Retrofit work suits plants whose panels date from the first expansion of their site: cement and steel works, petrochemical units, hospitals, malls and water pumping stations. We work in every region of Saudi Arabia. Jubail is about 1 hour from Dammam and Riyadh about 4 hours by road; Jeddah and Yanbu are reached by air or road.

Capacitor bank retrofit questions

Who provides capacitor replacement in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Power Factor Company provides capacitor replacement and PFC panel retrofit across Saudi Arabia, using ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens parts. We are approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission and have operated since 2010.

What affects the cost of replacing capacitors?

Price depends on how many steps need new capacitors, the kVAr and voltage class, whether contactors and the controller are renewed, whether reactors are added, the access to the panel and the length of outage you can offer. The audit fixes each item before you commit.

How long does a retrofit take?

The panel audit takes a few hours on site. The work itself depends on the number of steps, parts availability and the shutdown window your plant allows. Our typical lead time is the next working day for parts in Dammam stock, with panel work scheduled after the audit. Pre-ordering parts after the audit shortens the outage.

Is it better to repair a capacitor bank or buy a new one?

Repair suits a sound enclosure with failed components, while a new panel suits a damaged enclosure or a grown load. We cost both so that you can compare price, downtime and warranty before deciding.

Can you replace capacitors without a full shutdown?

Some work can proceed on live adjacent steps, but capacitor and contactor replacement requires isolation and discharge of the step concerned. We plan the sequence with your maintenance team to keep the rest of the bank running where it is safe.
