What is the purpose of a detuned reactor?
A capacitor and the supply inductance form a resonant circuit. If that resonance lands near a harmonic that your drives or UPS units inject, the harmonic current is amplified and the capacitor overloads. A series reactor lowers the resonance of each step below the lowest harmonic present, so the combination behaves as an inductor at harmonic frequencies and no longer attracts them.

What is the difference between 7% and 14% reactors?
The percentage is the reactor impedance as a share of the capacitor impedance, and it sets the tuning frequency. On a 60 Hz network, 7% tunes a step to about 227 Hz, safely below the 5th harmonic at 300 Hz. A 14% reactor tunes it to about 160 Hz, below the 3rd harmonic at 180 Hz.
Choose 7% where six-pulse drives and rectifiers dominate, and 14% where 3rd harmonic or heavy distortion is present. Measured data should confirm the choice.

How do I size a reactor?
Match three items to the capacitor step:
- kVAr and voltage: the reactor is rated for the step kVAr, and the capacitor is raised to 440 V or 525 V because the reactor lifts the voltage across it.
- Harmonic current: the reactor must carry fundamental plus harmonic current without saturating.
- Temperature: reactors run hot in an enclosure, so we check ventilation and fit a thermal contact.

How do we supply and fit reactors?
- Send data. Step sizes and the drive and UPS load list are enough.
- Select. We choose 7% or 14% and the capacitor voltage.
- Supply. Reactors arrive with thermal contacts.

- Test. Currents and temperatures are checked on load.

What affects the cost of a reactor?
Price follows the step kVAr, reactor percentage, supply voltage, winding material, thermal protection and quantity. A 14% unit is larger than a 7% unit of the same kVAr. Send your step list and the proposal prices each reactor.
How long does reactor delivery take?
Delivery depends on the rating, the quantity and whether it is held in stock. Uncommon ratings take longer. Our typical lead time is the next working day from Dammam stock.
Why are detuned reactors required for APFC panels?
Drives, UPS units and LED lighting inject harmonic currents. Without a reactor, the capacitor and supply can resonate near those frequencies, overloading the capacitor. A series reactor moves the resonance below them.
Can I add reactors to an existing capacitor bank?
Yes, if the capacitors are replaced with a higher voltage rating, the contactors are checked and the enclosure has room and ventilation for the reactors. We survey the bank and quote the retrofit as a complete scope.
