Harmonics Tripping Breakers in Industrial Plants

Saudi Power Factor Company diagnoses harmonics tripping breakers in Saudi Arabian plants and fits the detuned bank, reactor or filter that stops the trips. Drives, UPS units and rectifiers inject non-sinusoidal current that heats breakers, overloads neutrals and pushes capacitor banks into resonance. A measurement at the incomer shows which of these is happening.

What you receive: a written diagnosis of the harmonic cause with the recommended fix and its price, returned within one working day of receiving your drive and UPS list and trip history. Request a quotation

What do harmonic faults look like?

Harmonic problems often look like random electrical faults:

  • breakers trip although the ammeter shows normal current;
  • neutral conductors and busbars run hot;
  • earth leakage devices trip with no earth fault;
  • capacitor fuses blow, or capacitors overheat;
  • transformers and generators run hot or noisy; and
  • drives fault for no clear reason.

A high total harmonic distortion (THD) reading on the incomer usually confirms the pattern.

Why do harmonics trip breakers and equipment?

Trip pattern Likely cause What we measure
Thermal trips at normal indicated load Harmonic current raises true RMS and heating True RMS current, harmonic spectrum
Hot neutral in three-phase four-wire systems Triplen harmonics add in the neutral Neutral current, 3rd harmonic
Earth leakage trips with no fault High-frequency leakage through drive filters Leakage current, drive filter type
Capacitor fuses blow Resonance between capacitor bank and supply Bank current, harmonic voltage
Drive nuisance faults Voltage distortion and notching on shared supply Voltage THD, supply impedance

How do I know if THD is too high?

Measure THD of voltage and current at the point of common coupling, then compare with the limits your client or utility applies. IEEE 519 sets limits that depend on bus voltage and on the ratio of short-circuit current to load current. Voltage distortion affects every connected machine, so it is checked first. We log a full week, because harmonic levels follow the production cycle.

How do we stop harmonics tripping breakers?

The fix matches the source and the target:

  • Line reactors or DC chokes on drives reduce current distortion at the source.
  • Detuned capacitor banks stop resonance and protect capacitors; see detuned reactors.
  • Passive or active harmonic filter panels bring distortion down where limits must be met.
  • Neutral upgrades deal with triplen harmonics in older installations.

Our Italian partner Elcontrol Energy Net supplies NanoVIP analysers, including the Class A NanoVIP KUBA, that we use on harmonic surveys.

How do we diagnose and fix it?

  1. Send the facts. Trip history, drive and UPS list, and single-line diagram.
  2. Log. We install analysers at the incomer and suspect feeders for seven days.
  3. Analyse. We compare harmonics and trips with the production cycle.
  4. Report. You receive the cause, limits compared and a fix with a price.
  5. Install. We supply reactors, banks or filters, built with ABB, Schneider Electric and Siemens components.
  6. Verify. A second measurement confirms the improvement, and a maintenance plan keeps it that way.

Who we help

Saudi Power Factor Company has worked in Saudi Arabia since 2010 and is approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. Plants with many drives, such as pumping stations and plastics lines, see these faults most. We reach every region of Saudi Arabia from Dammam.

We have worked on projects for Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, in all regions of Saudi Arabia. Tell us your plant type and city in the quotation form, and we describe the scope closest to your harmonics job.

Questions we are asked before quoting

Who fixes harmonics tripping breakers in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Power Factor Company provides harmonic diagnosis and mitigation from Dammam, including surveys, detuned banks and filter panels. We have worked in Saudi Arabia since 2010 and are approved by Saudi Aramco, SABIC and the Royal Commission.

What affects the cost of a harmonic fix?

Cost follows the cause. Line reactors on a few drives cost far less than an active filter for a full plant. The survey sets the scope, so the proposal prices only the fix you need.

How long does a harmonic survey take?

We log for seven days to capture a full production cycle, then report. The time to install a fix depends on equipment and our lead time of 3–4 weeks for a detuned bank and 4–6 weeks for an active filter.

How do I reduce harmonics in an electrical system?

Reduce them at the source with reactors or chokes on drives, then use a filter where limits still need to be met. Detuned capacitor banks stop amplification. The measured spectrum decides the mix.

Can I stop trips just by raising the breaker setting?

Raising a setting hides the symptom and leaves cables and neutrals running hot. We first establish whether the trips are heating, resonance or leakage, then correct the source and reset protection.

What should I send to get a quotation?

Send the drive and UPS list with ratings, the trip history, the transformer size and, if possible, a single-line diagram. We reply with a measurement plan and a price in one working day.
